Achieve brings together key partners to explore college-and career-ready graduation requirements

7/9/2010

Twenty-two state teams participated in Achieve’s convening on Supporting College-and Career-Ready Graduation Requirements on June 17-18. The agenda was designed to spark conversations that explore critical topics such as communications strategies, developing and sustaining community and district support, implementing math pathways pivoting off of the common core standards, and establishing higher education incentives and policies to support the new graduation requirements.

Achieve engaged several close partner organizations including, America’s Promise Alliance, College Summit, Complete College America, Education Trust, Education Trust- West, and Jobs for the Future.

The meeting focused on the most significant implementation challenges states are facing, including academic supports for students, teacher capacity, the availability of quality curricular pathways, strategies for increasing graduation rates, alignment with postsecondary placement standards and first year courses, and communications and outreach strategies.

Time was also spent on strategies for sustaining the graduation policies through political transitions, as many of the states may experience turnover in governors or other key officials as a result of the 2010 elections. Access meeting materials including presentations and resources.
