California Dropout Prevention Summit
April 29, 2010
Convener: California Mayors Education Roundtable
Estimated Attendance: 150
Summit Location: Sacramento, CA
Highlights:
- While acknowledging that the dropout crisis is of concern to virtually every district in the state, the California Graduation Summit will provide a forum to develop high-impact actions that focus on urban districts with large concentrations of dropouts. The 17 cities that are members of the California Mayors Education Roundtable will be asked to send delegations to participate in the summit.
- The California Summit will set the stage for immediate action from educators, policymakers and community representatives by exploring three variables: implications for action at the state, district and individual school level. These three variables form the structure of the policy recommendations of the California Dropout Research Project (CDRP). The Summit will provide an opportunity to revisit the findings of the CDRP Policy Committee, chaired by Russell W. Rumberger, Professor of Education at UC Santa Barbara and Director of CDRP, and to build upon existing state reform efforts.
- Participants will receive a “Summit Brief” that includes the major themes of each of the panel presentations. This Summit Brief will also be shared with the media and the 58 county offices of education. The Planning Committee will develop a website for the Summit that provides ongoing links to policy papers, research, and planning tools. The site will also archive action plans developed by districts and local educational agencies throughout the state. Finally, the website will include links to national dropout task forces as well as community resources.
- Hosted by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, participation is expected from Governor Schwarzenneger, Senator Darrell Steinberg, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Fresno Mayor Alan Autry, Rowena Lagrosa, Superintendent of Moreno Valley Unified, and other key state policy leaders.
Summit Planning Team: The list of invited guests ensures direct support and participation from key leaders representing multiple sectors who have the ability to carry out the action plans and recommendations of the Summit. Participants will be invited as members of a regional team comprised of the mayor, county superintendent, district superintendents and community representatives.
